That's right Gavin's been potty trained for over a week now. No more nasty pooh smells, no more buying diapers, no running to change a nasty pooh while working out, no changing poohs in public restrooms, no more smelling pee, etc.....It is fantastic to have a child who INDEPENDENTLY toilets himself!
Our success story:)
One morning Gavin told me that he wanted to sit on the potty, I was totally shocked! He had never shown any interest to sit on the potty. I got my act together, stayed home that day, and taught him how to go potty on the toilet. My sister-in-law, Sherry, gave me a book called Toilet Training In Less Than A Day. I started reading it and followed the procedures outlined in the book. This is "our story":)
First, I went to the store got him his favorite drinks, special prizes and big boy underpants, that he got to pick out himself. Drinks are suppose to be his reward so he constantly needed to go pee. Gavin started learning from a doll we named "Suzy". The book wants you to get a doll that wets its pants. Luckily I had a doll passed down to me by Sherry. I read in the reviews that someone used a bear and sprayed the toilet with water when it was time to pee. I thought that was a cleaver idea. Gavin would give "Suzy" a drink of water and when Suzy had to go potty Gavin would run her to the toilet and sit her down so she could go. This would demonstrate how he should go potty too. After doing this several times then it was time for him to start trying. The first time he actually pee'd in the potty I was so excited. I thought it was funny how I was filled with overwhelming joy when he went potty for the first time; but it's truly an awesome thing when you are sick of changing diapers! Gavin would get so excited too. His eyes would light up when he could hear himself go "pee, pee". Giving him drinks and running to the potty was a constant thing all day long. It was an exhausting, long hard day, but so rewarding when it was over. During the next couple of days he did have accidents, but overall it was a success. He looks so dang cute in his underwear.
The only time I can get away with taking pictures of Gavin with a doll.
(ReAnn, you are right, this doll is well endowed.)
The method the book gives is great: loving, supportive, clear. I would strongly suggest it to anyone. The basic ideas really work: Loose cloth training pants, a doll that wets, which the child teaches first, rewards that taper off after more and more steps are completed, time solely dedicated to potting, and practicing after accidents. The only thing I changed was how many times Gavin "practiced". The book suggests to practice at least 10 times, I think Gavin caught on in about 4 times practicing. He hated practicing after he had an accident. He knew that if he had an accident he would have to practice and he didn't like that at all. The short-term hard work paid off and now I have a happy, independent little boy that loves the potty. I think most of all be patient! Happy Day!
